Islander Housing takes safety seriously by providing secure residential facilities and having professional and student housing staff on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week University Police Department conducts regular patrols of all residential areas and security cameras are in place throughout the communities.
The most important piece of the safety puzzle is our residents. Students are encouraged to be proactive about their safety by doing the following:
Malfunctioning or broken windows and doors, fire safety equipment, and water moisture concerns must be reported by submitting a maintenance request through the resident’s housing portal or by emailing Miramar or Momentum Village.
Any suspected or known criminal activity must be reported to the University Police Department at (361) 825-4444 or by filing a report on the UPD website. Further information on campus safety can be found here.
Urgent safety or criminal concerns should always be called in immediately to UPD. For emergencies, dial 911.
Fire or Medical Emergency: The University Police Department (UPD) is available 24/7 for emergencies at 361.825.4444. In the event of a life-threatening fire or medical emergency, call 911 immediately. Note: When 911 receives a call about an on-campus emergency, UPD is immediately notified and will respond to the scene.
At the beginning of each semester, fire drills are conducted to prepare residents for emergency evacuations. Housing staff and/or University Police will be present to assist with actual emergencies.
Utility Outages: Occasionally, the University will experience power outages, water shut offs, or water boil notifications. Notification will come from the Code Blue system or housing management. Unless otherwise stated, residents are allowed to remain on campus during utility outages.
